Una's Story
On 23rd December 2006, our mother (aged 83) was admitted to hospital after a fall. One complication after another resulted in two operations and a prolonged stay in the Bradford Royal Infirmary.
Looking back, Mum had been slightly confused before this, and she and Dad had managed reasonably well in their own house, with support from their family with shopping and cleaning etc. But, alas, after the hospital stay, she was considerably more confused. After an attempt at living back at home with Dad it soon became obvious we as a family could not manage. With Social Services help we found Sunningdale.
We were all in a very distressed state of mind, due to the situation, but the staff at Sunningdale were very sensitive to us all, at a very difficult time. My sister and I took Mum to Sunningdale, and she received a very warm welcome. We had lunch with her, and settled her in. Again, this was not easy, but the staff were kindness itself, not just to Mum, but also to my sister and I.
Now, 14 months later, between my sister and I, we visit 4 times per week - often we will have lunch or tea with Mum. We are always welcomed by the staff, who are all cheerful, gentle and kind, and treat the residents with dignity. I regularly see their kindness and patience to all the residents, in sometimes difficult situations. The food is freshly prepared, varied and tasty. The building is kept clean and hygienic and well decorated.
I know it can never be home for Mum, but she is now as well settled as we can hope for, and we can sleep at night, knowing she is well cared for and safe, 24 hours a day. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. You may have noticed that I repeatedly refer to the staff — they make Sunningdale what it is — a very caring home-from-home, with plenty of tender loving care for vulnerable people in their hour of need.
