As a family, we have been caring for the elderly for over 40 years
My first contact was on the phone to Alison, when I was looking for a care home for my mother, Joan Gledhill. As I live over 150 miles away, this was no easy task. I was impressed by Alison's kindly and impartial advice on the matter. The sympathetic attitude, towards both myself and my mother on our initial visit and on the day of admission, helped to make the whole process less traumatic (thanks in particular to Julie and Lesley).
When I visited my mother 3 days later, she was sitting in the sun in the lounge looking very neat and tidy, and above all, serene. I thought how much better she looked than in the previous 18 months, being looked after by carers who only 'dropped in' three times a day, and I knew that I had made the right decision.
The views and surroundings are just amazing - ideal for a nature-lover like my mother. She loves the trees and the fields, as well as the lambs, rabbits, birds, and other wildlife. And how many people could normally afford to live in such a house? The entrance hall is like a small hotel, and the dining room, lounges and bedrooms are tastefully decorated and furnished. The overall impression is of a home, not an institution.
Having had lunch at The Raikes on occasions, I can only praise the food, which is freshly cooked, and served nice and hot. What a contrast to the awful ready meals which my mother was eating before!
The staff are very patient, friendly and understanding. My mother likes to be "on the move" all the time: that is accepted by the staff, and nobody interferes with her freedom to do that. I would hate to have her "drugged up" to be kept docile.
When I phone or visit my mother, she is always cheerful and content. Having been at The Raikes for over a year now, she has deteriorated very little, and is very well settled. She has never complained that she wanted to go home, as far as I know. As she can be quite prone to grumble, this is an enormous compliment to your staff!
I always receive a good response from the staff when I phone, and a welcome, when I can get up north to visit. In particular, I should like to praise Moira, who I speak to most on the phone. She is always friendly and helpful, and deals with any concerns which I might have.
All I can say is that, if I should ever need residential care later in life, I sincerely hope that someone will find me somewhere with the same environment and standard of care as at The Raikes!
We invite you to inspect all of our care homes for yourselves (by prior arrangement), before making what is a very important and personal decision.
